Carpenter Family Barndominium With Extended Porch

Editor’s Note 6/25/24: We were so lucky to sit down with Suzi Carpenter who built this barndominium in Cassopolis, MI! Here’s what she had to say. Don’t miss the floor plan at the bottom of this page as well!

We didn’t want to jump straight into building our dream lake house (which was always the goal) so we built a barndominium with the intention of selling first. It ended up taking 1.5 years, and now we’ve moved into our lake house and this barndominium is now on the market.

Building the barndominium was rather tricky. Coming out of COVID, it was hard to find anyone in general. We eventually found someone 45 minutes away who was a pole barn expert, and unfortunately he had many problems getting quality workers. We ended up calling in own electrician, excavator, and people we knew locally.

The building was our own design, lumber company was 84 Lumber, someone onsite turned it into exact dimensions we wanted. Planned it so we had enough square footage in shed part to have RV and toys, tall ceiling for storage. Lots of Chicago people in the area likely using it as second home. Smaller bedrooms, laundry rooms, etc. Wanted it to be easy clean, concrete floors are heated, house very energy efficient. Exterior was done by Mark Williams Buildings.

Once the builder got the shell done, we found a local homebuilder to finish the interior, which was Bullseye Construction out of Vandalia.

Biggest surprise about living there? How low the energy bills are and how many people stop along the road to take pictures of our home.
